The Purple Path

Thor's whirling rainbow vortex refracts into six separate colored rays, bent as they pass through the transparent blue cube held by Thanos' purple hand!

Yes, Ant-Man was absolutely right to worry that teleporting was a dangerous move when your enemy has control over space itself! And now the heroes are being bent into different directions.

A purple ray conducts some of the heroes to the left.

Storm, the Scarlet Witch, and Machine Man emerge from the prismatic spray in a sparkling clean city of chrome spires under a lemon yellow sky. Three suns blaze in the heavens, blurring all shadows to a vague dimness directly underneath everything.

Blue people hurry around, wearing color-coded superhero suits. People with red tops go into the red buildings, while people with red pants enter the buildings with red stripes around their bottoms.

The sky is full of moving objects, seemingly levitated without the use of vehicles. A vague, fuzzy shadow falls over the Earthlings as a massive space ship shaped like a steel-and-crystal icicle slowly tracks across the skyline. It takes a long time to pass.

But no one notices the three arrivals from Earth, because no one looks up. All keep their eyes focused on the aluminum sidewalk a pace in front of them, where moving symbols direct them to where they are meant to go.

Then a white-haired superhero with a blue top (bearing a sun symbol) and red pants flies up and drops right next to our heroes!

He touches the glossy black bracelet on his left hand, then nods.

"Earth speakers," he says by way of greeting. "Bon. Permettez-moi a vous aider de trouver votre destination. Je m'appelle Mar-Vell, et vous etes maintenant a la cite du Trois, au planete de Hala. Nous sommes a la capitale de l'empire du Kree."

Machine Man looks at both Storm and the Scarlet Witch.

"Nope, didn't catch any of that," he admits.

  1. Scarlet Witch:

"Merci, Monsieur Mar-Vell. Je m'appelle Wanda Maximoff, et c'est m'amie Mademoiselle Orage. Je ne sais pas l'empire du Kree.

"Mais... nous sommes en train de arreter Thanos. Il voudrai détruire tous les mondes."

  2. "Alors, THANOS? Ou et-il? Que veux-t-il faire au Hala, ce planete-ci?"

Mar-Vell seems upset, as though asking directions to a bad accident.

  3. Storm's very first reaction is: "Machine Man! You're all right! I guess Spiderman rebooted you successfully!"

When the superhero comes, Storm nods politely. "Bonjour."

She listens carefully, while thinking, Aren't the Kree evil? Or is it just Ronan who is evil?

    1. Machine Man says,

"Yes, I was prevented from moving. My systems rebooted, and the zombie software was terminated. It didn't get me out of the webbing ... but perhaps someone could cut me loose."

The Guardians of the Galaxy certainly thought Ronan was evil, but they haven't expressed an opinion on the Kree.

"Notre ami, l'Homme du Machine, ne comprend pas le Francais. Parlez-vous Anglais?"

    1. "Anglais? Mais bien sur," avers Mar-Vell.

He touches the right black wrist-band for a moment.

"There! That should make me understandable to you, Man of the Machine. Are you three Avengers? We've heard of you even here on far-off Hala. It's said you thwarted one of Thanos' mad schemes, so well done!"

"Yes, Thanos," he says, remembering. "What's he up to now?"

    2. "It vas before my time."

"Now, he is collecting stones of power."

  5. "The Infinity Stones?" says Captain Mar-Vell. "He has tried before. But all are held by powers equal to or beyond Thanos himself, and he cannot attract allies, as all know of his obsession with Death."

Then a strident wailing echoes from one silver tower to the next. Each spire seems to pick up the call and echo it from pipe-organ tubes at its apex, until the whole city is howling.

All the Kree citizens quickly hustle inside the nearest buildings. Then some of them are pushed outside because they are not wearing the correct color coveralls, and hasten to find more suitable shelter.

A bird-winged green metal spaceship slices past between two towers, shaking the street. It tucks up behind a green pyramid and hovers, allowing two golden spheres with spikes on their noses to shoot past in pursuit.

Now that the pursuers are off the track, the green ship sets down, and two men get out. One is huge, massively muscled, bald, and green all over, except for thick red scars and tattoos. He holds a big knife in each hand.

The other wears a long leather coat and a gas mask with big red electronic eyes. He has a double-barreled laser blaster in one hand and a beeping, pinging computer box in the other.

The box indicates a particular tower, to which the man in the mask directs his green companion. He fiddles with the box, and across the street, all the security doors and windows of the chrome tower pop open.

Mar-Vell's eyes narrow in fury as he recognizes the daring robber.

"Star-Lord!" he exclaims. "So he's after the Genetic Archives, is he?"

And he bangs his left and right black wristbands together, creating a flash of golden light that wraps around him like robes of brilliance.

"Star-Lord!" he challenges. "Disarm yourself or face the fury of Captain Mar-Vell, Commander-Prime of the Kree Empire!"

    1. Scarlet Witch thinks it more likely that he will oblige if he is distracted . . . by his own fears, perhaps. He and his green and muscular friend. So, she will try to oblige with tendrils of smokey scarlet madness.
(Did I mention she used to work for Hydra?)
